Success Stories

Sam

Sam had lived in Sheffield for many years and had grown to understand the community deeply, paying attention to what people enjoyed and what was missing. Over time he became increasingly aware of the gap for authentic Afro Caribbean food, somewhere local residents could enjoy bold flavours and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that reminded them of home. He had carried this idea quietly in the background for a long while, knowing he wanted to create something that felt true to him, but like many people stepping into self employment for the first time, he needed the right support to bring that vision forward with confidence.

When Sam was referred to RIFT Social Enterprise, we began by spending time understanding what he wanted his business to look and feel like. He spoke passionately about the type of restaurant he hoped to create and the experience he wanted his customers to have. Our role was to help him turn that passion into a structured, achievable plan, while giving him the reassurance and space to make informed decisions along the way.

One of the first practical steps was exploring where the restaurant should be located. We supported Sam to research local premises and helped him consider the details that would shape the success of the business, such as footfall, affordability and the character of the surrounding area. Working through these options together helped him feel confident choosing a location that fitted his vision and offered a strong foundation for the future.

Once the right space had been secured, we worked closely with Sam to make sure he was set up correctly from day one. This included supporting him with his company registration and guiding him through the process of obtaining the food hygiene certificates needed for a safe and legally compliant food business. Alongside this, we helped Sam develop his branding, strengthen his online presence and think through the different ways he could market the business when he was ready to open the doors.

Starting a restaurant comes with a range of essential costs, and purchasing the right equipment early on can be a real challenge for new founders. Through our Discresionay Access Fund that we’ve built as a not-for-profit that reinvests back into the business, we were able to help Sam secure some key items he needed to begin service with confidence and professionalism such as knives. This removed a significant barrier and allowed him to focus on refining his menu and creating an atmosphere that reflected everything he wanted the restaurant to stand for.

Our support continues beyond launch, and Sam, like all the sole traders we work with, receives his first year’s self assessment tax return free of charge. This takes away some of the early pressure that many new business owners face and helps them stay compliant as they settle into the rhythm of managing their finances.

Today, Sam runs a lively Afro Caribbean restaurant that brings people together through food and atmosphere.
